Upon receiving information about the incident, the police arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. The police have also informed the family of Surendra Koli, a native of Almora, about the incident. Officials stated that the matter is being investigated from every angle.
Body found hanging in tea stall
The Sapt Rishi police outpost (under the City Kotwali) received information that a man had hanged himself in a tea stall located opposite the Lalmata Temple on Sapt Sarovar Road. Acting on the information, the police reached the spot. The deceased was identified as Surendra Koli, a resident of village Mangrukhal, Bhikiasain, Almora.
Had been living in Haridwar for a few months
City Station House Officer (SHO) Kundan Singh Rana stated that Surendra Koli was an accused in the Nithari case. Preliminary investigations revealed that he had been living in Haridwar for a few months and was running a rented tea stall. According to the police, no suicide note was found at the shop. The matter is being investigated from all aspects.
Acquitted by the Supreme Court in 2025
It is worth noting that in 2025, the Supreme Court acquitted Surendra Koli, who had previously been convicted in the Nithari case. The Nithari murder and rape case had come to light in 2006. The Allahabad High Court had initially sentenced Surendra Koli to death in this case. Subsequently, in 2015, the court commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment.
