A large number of people have fallen ill after consuming a toxic drink. Around 100 people are undergoing treatment in the hospital. The deceased are being identified.

At least 48 people died after consuming a local beverage in Nigeria’s Ondo state. One hundred people have been hospitalized for treatment. Ondo police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh stated that among the 15 people arrested in connection with the incident, one individual was producing the beverage.
Suspicion of Methanol in the Beverage
He said the beverage is suspected to contain methanol, and the accused is currently assisting the police with the investigation. State Health Commissioner Banji Ajaka reported that more than 100 other people have fallen ill in recent days after consuming the drink in the Odigbo and Irele areas of Ondo.
Total of 182 People Affected
Ondo State Health Commissioner Banji Ajaka stated that these cases emerged in the Odigbo and Irele local government areas. He said a total of 182 people have been affected.
Risk of Kidney Failure
He said, “It all happened very quickly. Depending on the quantity consumed, kidneys would fail, eyes would stop functioning, and the brain would suffer damage.” He added that some of the people who fell ill after consuming the liquid have since been discharged from the hospital.
Ondo State police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh said that one of the 15 people arrested in connection with the incident was producing a “methanol-laced beverage” and is currently cooperating with the police investigation.
First Death Occurred Two Weeks Ago
According to local media reports, the first death was reported about two weeks ago. In Africa’s most populous country—particularly in rural areas of Nigeria, where locally produced alcohol is cheaper—consuming such drinks is common. The country’s national food and drug administration and control agency is currently enforcing a nationwide ban on alcohol in pouches and small plastic containers, which it says are easily accessible to children and young people.
