A new angle has emerged following a recent incident of severe turbulence on an Air India flight. On August 4, Air India flight AI2379 (an A320 aircraft) en route from Phuket to Delhi encountered severe turbulence. During the incident, the aircraft suddenly dropped about 300 feet, resulting in injuries to several passengers and crew members. The captain has since undergone a drug test in connection with the matter.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently investigating the incident. Sources indicate that the pilots underwent drug/dope tests upon arrival in Delhi following the turbulence. The captain’s test reportedly showed traces of a psychoactive substance; however, Air India has not yet confirmed this result. The airline stated that the test was conducted but they have not yet received the report.
It is evident that the investigation is not limited to how the aircraft was handled from the cockpit during the turbulence; the DGCA is also examining whether the incident was caused by weather conditions or other factors. They are looking into the impact on the aircraft and whether continuing the flight to Delhi under those circumstances was the right decision.
Awaiting the Test Report
It is worth noting that a pilot being under the influence of psychoactive substances while flying is a serious safety issue. International aviation regulations prohibit such pilots from operating flights. The matter now awaits the official release of the test report and the completion of the investigation.

So far, the regulator and the ministry have remained completely silent regarding the potential impact of this development on the investigation or even the veracity of the report.
