A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck Japan’s Kyushu region on July 28, 2026, generating waves up to 3.28 feet high. This information was released by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Authorities have issued strict instructions for coastal residents to immediately move to higher ground. The Japanese government has also issued a high alert across several prefectures.
Alerts Issued for These Japanese Prefectures
The Japanese government has declared an emergency earthquake alert for the prefectures of Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki, located on the southern island of Kyushu. The earthquake registered a maximum intensity of ‘Shindo 7’ on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. This indicates that the tremors were so violent that it was difficult for people to even remain standing. During the quake, several buildings shook violently, swaying like a house of cards. Relief and rescue teams have swung into action following the earthquake.
Bullet Trains Halted
The Japanese government and local authorities have suspended bullet train services on the Kyushu Shinkansen line with immediate effect. Highways in the affected areas have been closed, and there are reports of disruptions to electricity and water supplies. Additionally, safety checks are being conducted at nuclear power plants located in the region.
It is worth noting that Japan is situated along the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire,’ one of the world’s most dangerous seismic zones. Four tectonic plates converge here, causing constant seismic activity beneath the earth’s surface. Japan alone accounts for approximately 18 percent of the world’s major earthquakes.
