A mob pelted stones, vandalized an Assam Rifles camp, and set fire to three security vehicles—hours after security forces conducted a search operation in an area of Manipur’s Senapati district. Officials provided this information on Wednesday. They stated that the violence occurred at the paramilitary force’s camp, located at the district headquarters, at 9:30 AM on Tuesday when the mob attacked the barracks.

In a statement, the Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) said that the Assam Rifles had launched a patrol and search operation in the Makuilongdi area—located about two kilometers west of the designated ‘National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah’ (NSCN-IM) camp at Oklang—following credible intelligence regarding the presence of armed cadres.

The official stated, “Intelligence reports and social media posts revealed that armed cadres were moving outside designated camps; they were carrying weapons and wearing uniforms, which was a clear violation of the agreed ceasefire ground rules.” He added that these violations had been formally reported to the Ceasefire Monitoring Group (CFMG). He noted that during the operation, Assam Rifles troops advanced towards Makuilongdi and Oklang villages but were stopped by local residents, including women.

The official mentioned that amidst rising tensions, information was received around 9 PM that a large crowd had gathered in Senapati town and was preparing to march towards the Assam Rifles camp. The statement noted that despite the troops withdrawing, a large mob reached the camp around 9:30 PM, pelting stones that caused property damage and attempting arson. The camp is located at Naga Taphou in the district.

The official stated that the mob vandalized and damaged Assam Rifles vehicles. They said, “A light vehicle was set on fire, while two trucks were overturned and damaged, and a civilian’s car was also torched during the violence.” The statement added that mild force was used in coordination with the Manipur Police to disperse the violent mob and prevent the situation from escalating further. It further stated that the Senapati Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were immediately deployed to assist security personnel in bringing the situation under control.
