वेनेजुएला में 7.1 और 7.5 तीव्रता के दो जबरदस्त भूकंप से भारी तबाही, 10 हजार लोगों की मौत
Two consecutive powerful earthquakes have sparked panic across Venezuela. Reports indicate structural damage to buildings and collapsing walls in several areas, including the capital, Caracas. Thousands of people rushed out of their homes and offices onto the streets. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the death toll from this disaster could exceed 10,000.
Two Major Earthquakes Within a Minute
According to the USGS, the first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, which was later revised to 7.2. Its epicenter was located west of the Morón area on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, with a recorded depth of approximately 22 kilometers. Just one minute after the initial tremor, a second, more powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck. The second quake had a depth of 10 kilometers, and its epicenter was situated about 16 kilometers southwest of Morón.
According to an AP report, these earthquakes—measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude—shook the entire region. The impact was so widespread that buildings had to be evacuated as far away as the Amazon region in Brazil, approximately 1,700 kilometers away.
People Flee Homes in Caracas
These tremors are being ranked among the most powerful earthquakes to hit Venezuela in over a century. In the capital, Caracas, residents felt buildings swaying, prompting large numbers of people to rush out of homes, offices, and other structures. Walls collapsed in several areas, and in some places, the force was such that furniture inside homes became visible from the street.
Large clouds of dust were also observed in two areas of Caracas—districts typically bustling with restaurants and commercial activity. Chaos and panic ensued in the aftermath of the earthquakes. Questions Raised Over Government’s Response
Late Wednesday night, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez stated that she was preparing to address the nation. However, for nearly three hours after the earthquake struck, the government provided no official information regarding injuries or fatalities. This drew criticism from politicians and many citizens alike.
The situation is currently being monitored, and the extent of the damage is being assessed. These two consecutive major earthquakes have shaken all of Venezuela and heightened concerns about potential devastation.
