A tragic incident occurred late Wednesday night on the Yamuna Expressway near the Jewar Cargo Airport in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where a tourist sleeper bus traveling from Delhi’s Kashmere Gate to Mahoba caught fire. Nine passengers were burnt alive in this horrific blaze, while several others sustained burn injuries. The fire was so intense that the bodies of the deceased were completely charred, making on-the-spot identification impossible. DNA tests will be conducted to identify the bodies, and they will be handed over to the families only after the samples match.
Bus was en route from Kashmere Gate to Mahoba
According to reports, the sleeper bus departed from Delhi’s Kashmere Gate on Wednesday night, carrying passengers to Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh. As the bus reached the Yamuna Expressway near the Jewar Cargo Airport in the Greater Noida area, it suddenly caught fire. Within moments, the fire intensified, and the entire bus was engulfed in flames. Panic gripped the passengers inside; while some managed to save their lives by breaking windows and jumping out, nine people were trapped amidst the flames and could not escape. It took the fire brigade team approximately four hours to bring the massive blaze under control; the fire was fully extinguished by 3:00 AM. The intensity of the fire suggests that highly flammable materials may have been present on the bus.
Identification of the deceased via DNA samples
Nine bodies have been brought to the mortuary in Noida’s Sector 94. Visual identification of the bodies is not possible. According to the police, efforts are underway to contact the passengers’ families using the online and offline ticket booking lists. Officials have clarified that DNA tests will be conducted on family members to officially confirm the identities of the deceased; the bodies will be handed over to the families only after a match is established. Upon learning of the incident, relatives of those who were on the bus—and with whom contact had been lost since the previous night—began arriving at the mortuary. The atmosphere is deeply somber as grieving families search for their loved ones.
Distraught family members arrive
A young man, arriving at the mortuary in a state of distress, stated that his mother and brother were missing and the police were unable to provide any information. Meanwhile, Pradeep Gupta, who also arrived at the mortuary, said his mother-in-law was traveling from Delhi to Rath by bus and is currently missing. His brother-in-law had received news of the incident from the ‘Raj Kalpana’ travel agency. Upon reaching the accident site, they learned that the injured had been hospitalized, but she was not found at the hospital either; subsequently, the police directed them to the mortuary in Sector 94.
Police action and investigation ordered
The police administration swung into action immediately following the incident. Taking swift action, the police have detained the bus driver and conductor. A case has been registered against them under relevant sections, and they are undergoing intensive interrogation. The police are also investigating whether adequate fire safety equipment was available on the bus. Additionally, a forensic team is assisting in determining the root cause of the fire.
Treatment of the injured; other passengers sent to their destinations
Passengers injured in the accident have been admitted to a nearby private hospital, where doctors are monitoring their condition. Meanwhile, passengers who had safely escaped in time were sent to their destinations—Mahoba and surrounding areas—that very night, after the police administration arranged an alternative bus for them. Currently, a heavy police force and ambulances are deployed outside the Sector 94 mortuary to handle any potential emergency.
