Woman poisons to death three minor daughters in Thane; arrested

A 27-year-old woman was arrested late Saturday night in Thane district of Maharashtra for allegedly poisoning her three minor daughters to death due to domestic problems, police said.

A senior police officer said, “Housewife Sandhya Sandeep Bere, a resident of Talepada in Asnoli village under Shahpur area, allegedly mixed pesticide in “Varan Bhaat” (a traditional dish of rice and lentils) and fed it to her daughters aged five, eight and 10 years on July 20.”

He said that soon the girls started feeling unwell and started vomiting and feeling dizzy, after which they were admitted to a local hospital.

When their condition deteriorated, two of them were admitted to a hospital in Mumbai, the official said. One of them died on July 24 and the other on July 25, while the third girl was referred to a hospital in Nashik, where she also died on July 24, the official said.

The Khinawali police had initially registered a case of accidental death. However, after the post-mortem report of the girls came on Saturday night, it was found that they had poison in their bodies, police said.

Acting swiftly on the basis of crucial evidence, police registered a case of murder against the mother of the children and arrested her around 2 am on Saturday, the official said.

According to police, the accused woman was facing domestic problems, including her husband’s drinking habit. Police said the woman was living separately from her husband and was facing difficulties in taking care of her three daughters, which led her to allegedly commit the crime.
