West Bengal: An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter Scale hit South-West from BMD Seismic Centre

Earthquake tremors were felt in Kolkata. The magnitude of the quake was measured at 5.4 on the Richter scale.

Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, and several districts in South Bengal on Friday afternoon. The tremor, which occurred at around 1:22 pm, caused panic among the people. People in high-rise buildings and offices rushed out as a precaution and gathered on the streets. According to preliminary information, the epicenter was in Khulna district, Bangladesh.

Quake’s intensity recorded at 5.5 on the Richter scale

According to the Geological Survey of India (GSI), the earthquake’s intensity was recorded at 5.5 on the Richter scale, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) estimated it at 5.3. The epicenter was reportedly located about 26 kilometers from Taki, Bengal, so the tremors were felt more strongly in Kolkata and the border areas. The tremor, which lasted for a few seconds, sent people fleeing for open spaces in panic in many areas.

Tremors in Sikkim Also

It is noteworthy that a 2.4 magnitude earthquake was also recorded in Sikkim at around 12 noon on the same day. Earlier, on February 3rd, tremors were felt in Bengal, with the epicenter in Myanmar. The continuous tremors have raised concerns among the administration and experts. The administration has urged people not to panic if they feel tremors and to avoid using elevators.
