Vegetarian thali became costlier in March, non-veg cheaper: Report

According to the report, due to less arrivals, the prices of rice have also increased by 14 percent and the prices of pulses by 22 percent as compared to a year ago.

In the month of March, due to increase in prices of onion, tomato and potato, vegetarian thali became costlier by seven percent on an annual basis. A unit of domestic rating agency CRISIL presented this survey on Thursday.

CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analysis, in its monthly ‘Roti Chawal Rates’ report, said the cost of non-vegetarian thali declined by seven per cent last month due to falling poultry prices.

The vegetarian thali comes with roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad. The price of this thali increased to Rs 27.3 per plate in March, from Rs 25.5 in the same period a year ago. However, the price of vegetarian thali has decreased in March compared to Rs 27.4 in February.

The report says, “Due to reduced arrivals and low base rate, vegetarian thali has become expensive as onion prices have increased by 40 percent, tomato prices by 36 percent and potato prices by 22 percent on an annual basis.”

According to the report, due to less arrivals, the prices of rice have also increased by 14 percent and the prices of pulses by 22 percent as compared to a year ago.

Whereas the price of non-vegetarian thali was Rs 59.2 in the same period a year ago, it came down to Rs 54.9 last month. But its price is still higher than Rs 54 per plate in February.

In fact, due to 16 percent decline in the prices of broiler chicken, the cost of non-vegetarian thali decreased on an annual basis. In the non-vegetarian thali, broiler has 50 percent weight.

However, broiler prices increased by five per cent due to the onset of the holy month of Ramzan and higher demand in March compared to February.
