Naini Lake, Uttarakhand’s main water body and tourist destination, is in trouble due to its old and broken aeration (oxygen support) system. This system, which has been artificially providing oxygen to the lake for the last 18 years, has now become completely dilapidated.

What happened to the aeration system?

This technology, installed in 2007, was based on two flowmeters and a pipeline system, which maintained the oxygen balance in the water and kept the aquatic life alive.

The average life of these devices is considered to be 5-10 years, which ended in 2017 and 2013 respectively. Now four pipes in one flowmeter and two in the other have completely stopped working, the rest have also become weak and oxygen is leaking due to bursting in many places.

Experts are warning that if a new aeration system is not installed immediately, the oxygen level in the lake may fall further, causing aquatic life to die, the quality of water will deteriorate, which will cause a major setback.

What did the administration say?

According to Vijay Nath Shukla, Secretary of Lake Development Authority, a proposal was sent to the government regarding the problem, the answers to which have been sent to the government. A solution is expected soon.

District Magistrate Vandana Singh said that with the help of technical agencies, a proposal has been prepared to replace or repair faulty equipment, which will be implemented soon.

Let us now know what an aeration system is. Aeration system means a system that adds air (oxygen) to water.

Understand the aeration system like this:

Just as humans need air to breathe, fish, plants and other organisms living in water need oxygen.

Many times there is a lack of oxygen in a lake, pond or tank.

The aeration system delivers fine bubbles or air into the water through machines, pipes and pumps, so that the level of oxygen dissolved in the water can increase.

It is used in lakes, aquariums, sewage treatment plants and fish farming so that the water remains clean and safe for organisms.
