The Chardham Yatra was temporarily halted on Sunday in view of the Meteorological Department’s forecast of heavy to very heavy rains in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand on July 7 and 8. Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said that it has been decided to postpone the yatra keeping in mind the safety of the pilgrims.
He said that the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in Garhwal division on July 7 and 8, in view of this, all the devotees are requested not to leave for Chardham Yatra beyond Rishikesh on July 7.
He said that the devotees who have left for Chardham Yatra should stay at the same place where they are now till the weather improves. Due to heavy rains in various parts of Uttarakhand for the last few days, landslides are occurring in the hilly areas and the highway going to Badrinath has been blocked at many places due to debris falling down from the hill.
Two devotees from Hyderabad were killed after being hit by rocks falling from the hill after a landslide in Chamoli district on Saturday. Both were returning from Badrinath by motorcycle. Rivers in the state are also in spate. Alaknanda river is flowing close to the danger mark at Vishnu Prayag near Joshimath, Alaknanda merges with Dhauli Ganga at Vishnu Prayag.
The water level of the Ganga river has risen due to rain in the upper hilly areas of Rishikesh. SP Rural Rishikesh Lokjeet Singh said, “There was already a forecast of rain in the hilly areas and there was a possibility of water level rising. Preventive measures have been taken by the police. Police have been deployed on the ghats, people are being stopped from going near the river. All kinds of efforts are going on, people are also being made aware.”
