This sample of Patanjali ghee was taken in 2020. The decision in the case is expected on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

According to Pithoragarh Assistant Commissioner RK Sharma, on October 20, 2020, Food Safety Officer Dilip Jain collected a sample of Patanjali cow ghee from Karan General Store in Kasani, Pithoragarh, during a routine inspection. The sample was then sent to the state government’s state laboratory in Rudrapur, where the ghee was found to be substandard.
Patanjali officials were informed of this in 2021, but the company did not respond for a long time. Later, on October 15, 2021, company officials requested a re-test. The company requested that the samples be tested at a central lab. Patanjali was charged a fee of ₹5,000 for this.
Following this, a team of officials visited the National Food Laboratory in Ghaziabad on October 16, 2021, to re-test the samples, where the ghee was re-tested. The National Food Laboratory submitted its report on November 26, 2021. There, too, Patanjali cow ghee samples failed to meet standards. The report was then studied for two months. The case was then presented to the court on February 17, 2022, and a notice was issued to Patanjali.
Following this, Food Safety Department official Dilip Jain presented evidence in the case to the court of Additional District Magistrate, Pithoragarh, Yogendra Singh. The court delivered its verdict on Thursday, nearly four years later, imposing fines of ₹100,000 on Patanjali Ayurved Limited (manufacturer), ₹25,000 on Brahma Agency (distributor), and ₹15,000 on Karan General Stores (seller). The court also warned Patanjali to comply with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
