Under the Namami Gange project, all the contracts for the 18 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) built in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts, for which the joint venture company was in charge, have been cancelled. In the magisterial inquiry into the Chamoli STP accident, holding this company guilty, its contract was canceled and it was recommended to be blacklisted.

The joint venture company (Jaibhushan Malik Contractors, Patiala and Confident Engineering India Pvt. Ltd., Coimbatore) was responsible for 18 sewage treatment plants (STPs) built in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts under the Namami Gange project. All his contracts have been cancelled.

Now Jal Sansthan and Drinking Water Corporation have taken over the operation of all these STPs till the new system is in place. Along with this, the process of blacklisting the company has also been started.

On July 19, 16 people died due to electrocution at Chamoli STP, while 12 were injured. After the accident, Jal Sansthan had sent a notice to the company operating the STP, asking it to start the plant within 48 hours, but the company did not do so.

This company had the responsibility of operating 18 STPs of Chamoli, Nandprayag, Karnaprayag and Rudraprayag for 15 years. Of these, 11 STPs have been transferred to the Jal Sansthan, while seven are with the Drinking Water Corporation. Both the departments had contracted with the company.

At the same time, after the accident, an exercise was started in the direction of seizing the bank guarantee of Rs 1.10 crore of the company, in which success has also been achieved. This amount has come into the account of Drinking Water Corporation.

Secretary Drinking Water Arvind Hyanki said that the deficiencies in these STPs are being rectified by Jal Sansthan and Drinking Water Corporation. It will take a week to start operation of Chamoli STP. While the remaining operations will be started in two-three days.

Secretary Drinking Water informed that Jal Sansthan and Drinking Water Corporation have been instructed to invite tenders for the selection of new firm to operate these STPs. Till the new system is in place, the STP will be operated by Jal Sansthan and Drinking Water Corporation.
