Regulations regarding the sale of eggs in Uttar Pradesh have undergone changes. It is no longer permissible to sell old eggs by misrepresenting them as fresh. The UP government has issued strict directives in this regard. Effective April 1st, it has become mandatory to stamp an expiration date on every egg. This expiration date will be applied in the form of a stamp. Action will also be taken against shopkeepers who fail to comply with these new regulations.

Following its focus on crime control, Chief Minister Yogi’s administration has now turned its attention toward safeguarding consumer health. Given the high rate of egg consumption in the state, the UP government has tightened the regulations governing their sale. From April 1st onwards, it will be mandatory to stamp both the date of production and the expiration date on every egg sold within the state. This measure will prevent shopkeepers from selling old or spoiled eggs, while enabling customers to verify the freshness of the eggs themselves by simply checking the dates.

It is worth noting that these regulations are being implemented under the directives of the Department of Animal Husbandry and the Department of Food Safety. According to the Chief Veterinary Officer, eggs have a direct bearing on human health, and there had been previous complaints regarding the sale of stale eggs. The implementation of these new rules is expected to foster transparency and ensure that the public has access to safe eggs.

What is the Shelf Life of Eggs?

Yes, indeed—eggs do have an expiration date. At normal room temperature (approximately 30°C), eggs remain fresh for up to two weeks. When stored in a cool environment (between 2°C and 8°C), they can be safely consumed for up to five weeks. However, many shopkeepers previously failed to utilize proper cold storage facilities. Now, thanks to the mandatory stamping, customers will be able to verify the freshness of the eggs with ease.

What Action Will Be Taken Against Violators?

The UP government has made it explicitly clear that if any trader or shopkeeper fails to comply with these regulations, the eggs found in their shop will be confiscated. These confiscated eggs will either be destroyed or clearly marked with a label stating that they are “Not Safe for Human Consumption.” The concerned department will conduct rigorous inspections and take strict action against any violators.
