In Kashi, the city of Shiva, the administration bulldozed the road from the Police Line to the Kachari Road. A road widening drive is underway from Kachari to Sandha. During this, 13 houses were demolished, including the house of Padmashree-awarded hockey player Mohammad Shahid. Police from three police stations and the RAF were present at the scene. Shahid’s family argued with the police and administration, demanding a halt to the action, but their pleas were ignored, and the bulldozer was deployed.
Mohammad Shahid’s family continued to protest the demolition, but the administration was unmoved. According to Aaj Tak, his sister-in-law, Nazneen, stated that they had not received any compensation and did not own another house. Consequently, they would be rendered homeless. Mushtaq, Shahid’s maternal uncle’s son, alleged that a wedding was taking place in their family, and they had no land elsewhere. He said this was simply “administrative hooliganism” and no arrangements were being made for rehabilitation.
The public will not forgive the BJP government – Ajay Rai
This action by the administration is being opposed. Congress leader Ajay Rai has targeted the BJP over this matter. He wrote on Instagram, “The BJP government razed the house of Padmashree Mohammad Shahid. This was not just a house, but a symbol of the country’s sporting heritage. The public will not forgive the BJP government for insulting the talents and respected personalities on the land of Kashi.”
Modi government targeting the country’s great personalities – AAP
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) shared a video and accused the Modi government of targeting the country’s great personalities. The party posted on social media, “First, the Modi government jailed Sonam Wangchuk, who fought for the rights of Ladakh, and even called him a traitor. Now, the house of the late Mohammad Shahid, a Padma Shri awardee who won a gold medal in Olympic hockey, was razed to the ground with a bulldozer. The Modi government can give 1050 acres of land to Adani for ₹1, but not a house to the country’s hero.”
On Sunday, the bulldozer first demolished the wall of the Kachnar Shahid Mazar. Shops were then razed to the ground. The bulldozer also demolished the house of hockey player Mohammad Shahid, the same Shahid who played a key role in India’s gold medal win at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
