Russia has launched a fresh attack on Ukraine’s capital Kiev, after which a fire broke out in the cabinet building in the Pechersky district. Timur Tkachenko, the head of the Ukrainian military administration, gave this information on social media on Sunday.
According to a Reuters report, eyewitnesses saw thick smoke rising from the main building of the Ukrainian government.
Russia shot down more than 800 drones
Ukrainian officials said that Russia carried out attacks on Kiev overnight, in which three people, including a newborn, were killed, while 18 others were injured. Several buildings, including the government headquarters in the capital, were set on fire. Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that the attack began with drone attacks on the city and was followed by missile attacks.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko said that for the first time during the war, the main building of the Ukrainian government has been damaged in an enemy attack. Ukraine’s air force says Russia fired 805 drones and 13 missiles into Ukraine overnight. Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app that a child and a young woman were killed in the drone attacks, while five people, including a pregnant woman, were hospitalized. Earlier, an elderly woman died in a shelter in the leafy Darnytsky district east of the Dnieper River, where two other deaths were reported.
Residential areas heavily damaged
State emergency officials said two of the four floors of a residential building in Darnytsky were engulfed in fire, causing extensive damage to the building. Klitschko and emergency officials said several floors of a nine-story residential building in Kiev’s western Sviatoshinsky district were destroyed.

Falling debris from drones also set a 16-story apartment building and two nine-story buildings on fire. Pictures posted on social media by emergency officials showed smoke billowing from apartment buildings, some floors collapsed and significant damage to the facade. Tkachenko said on Telegram that Russia was deliberately targeting civilians.
Russia accused of targeting civilians
Mayor Vitaly Maletsky said on Telegram that dozens of explosions occurred in the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk, disrupting power supply to some areas. Military administration chief Oleksandr Vilkul said Russian attacks on Kryvyi Rih targeted transport and urban infrastructure, although no casualties were reported. Regional governor Oleh Kiper said civil infrastructure and residential buildings were damaged in Odessa in southern Ukraine, and several apartment blocks were on fire.
Moscow did not immediately comment on the attacks. However, both sides have denied deliberately targeting civilians. Thousands of people have been killed since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine in February 2022. The Polish Armed Forces said that there is a threat of air attacks on western Ukraine, so Poland has activated more of its allied aircraft to ensure air security.
Counter-attack on Russian pipeline
In response to the attack, Ukraine has also targeted Russia’s oil pipeline. Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s drone force, said the Druzhba oil pipeline in Russia’s Bryansk area has been attacked, causing heavy damage. The attack on the Druzhba pipeline has affected the supply of Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia, which are still meeting their energy needs from Russia after other European countries ended ties after the 2022 attack.
Kiev said the attack was aimed at weakening Russia’s war efforts. Due to Ukrainian attacks, oil supplies to both countries have been disrupted several times in recent weeks. There has been no immediate statement from Moscow on this issue.
