US President Donald Trump claimed that India will no longer buy crude oil from Russia, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him of this. Responding to comments on India’s energy sourcing, official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “India is a significant importer of oil and gas. Protecting the interests of Indian consumers in a volatile energy landscape has been our consistent priority. Our import policies are fully guided by this objective. Ensuring stable energy prices and secure supplies are the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broadening our energy sourcing base and diversifying it in line with market conditions. As for the United States, we have been striving to expand our energy purchases for several years. We have made steady progress over the past decade. The current administration has expressed interest in deepening energy cooperation with India. Discussions are ongoing.”
This comment comes after US President Donald Trump claimed that India will no longer buy oil from Russia. Trump also spoke of his friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump has claimed that his friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has assured him that India will stop buying oil from Russia. He described this move as a “big step” toward increasing pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Speaking in his Oval Office address on Wednesday, he said the US is unhappy with India buying crude oil from Russia. He argued that such purchases help finance President Vladimir Putin’s wars.
What did Trump say?
Responding to a question, Trump said, “He (Modi) is my friend, we have a very good relationship… We weren’t happy with him buying oil from Russia because it allowed Russia to continue this senseless war in which they’ve lost 150,000 people.” He added, “I wasn’t happy that India was buying oil, and (Modi) assured me today that they won’t buy oil from Russia. That’s a big step.” Now we have to get China to do the same.” According to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), India is the second-largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels after China. Calling the Indian Prime Minister “a great guy,” Trump said, “He loves Trump… I don’t want you to take the word love any other way… I don’t want to ruin his political career.” Praising Modi’s leadership, Trump said, “I’ve watched India for years. It’s an incredible country, and every year you have a new leader. Someone lives there for a few months, and this has been year after year, and my friends have been there for a long time, and they have assured me that no oil will be purchased from Russia.”
What else does Trump’s claim include?
Trump claimed, “He further said that phasing out oil will take time, but it’s already underway. He (Modi) has assured me that no oil will be purchased from Russia. I don’t know, maybe it’s a breaking story.” Can I say that?… They are not buying oil from Russia. It has already started. They can’t do it immediately, it’s a small process, but it will be completed soon.’ He said that India could resume energy trade with Moscow after the Russia-Ukraine war ends. Trump said, ‘If India doesn’t buy oil, it becomes very easy, and they won’t, they have assured me that they will not buy oil from Russia within a short period of time… and they will go back to Russia once the war is over.’ Traditionally dependent on Middle Eastern oil, India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has significantly increased its imports from Russia after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
