The joy of the Chhath festival turned into mourning on Tuesday morning in Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh. Three devotees were killed in a tragic road accident on National Highway 19 (NH-19) near Panchfedwa village in the Alinagar police station area. It is reported that around 5:30 a.m., three people heading towards the Chhath Ghat were crushed by an unidentified speeding truck, killing them on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Kumari Devi (52), her daughter-in-law Chandni Devi (27), and grandson Saurabh Kumar (7), residents of Revasa Panchfedwa. The truck driver fled with the vehicle after the accident. The impact was so severe that the Megha Baba temple located on the side of the road was also damaged.
Locals reported that the three devotees were walking towards the ghat for Chhath Puja when a speeding truck coming from behind crushed them. Following the accident, people nearby rushed to the scene and informed the police.
The Alinagar police and NHAI helpline team immediately arrived at the scene, took possession of the bodies, and sent them to the district hospital for post-mortem.
The accident sent shockwaves through the area. Villagers reported that the truck driver lost control of the truck after the accident and fled, smashing a roadside temple. Police have collected evidence from the scene and are now examining CCTV footage to identify the fleeing vehicle.
