Tomato prices are once again touching the sky in the country. Tomatoes are being sold up to Rs 259 per kg in the country’s capital Delhi. Tomato is being sold at Rs 259 per kg at successful retail outlets of Mother Dairy. Retail prices in the capital had started coming down since a few days, but due to short supply, the prices have shot up again. Earlier, in view of the situation, the central government had started selling tomatoes at a subsidized rate from July 14.
According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry, the retail price of tomato touched Rs 203 per kg on Wednesday. At the same time, its price at Mother Dairy’s successful retail outlets was Rs 259 per kg. According to Mother Dairy, the supply of tomatoes across the country has been affected for the last two months due to inclement weather, which is having an impact on prices. In the last two days, the arrival of tomatoes in Azadpur mandi has decreased considerably. In such a situation, due to short supply, wholesale prices have increased rapidly, which has also affected retail prices.
Wholesale tomato prices at Azadpur, Asia’s largest fruit and vegetable wholesale market, ranged between Rs 170-220 per kg on Wednesday, depending on the quality. Azadpur Tomato Association President Ashok Kaushik said that the arrival of tomatoes has reduced in the last three days. Heavy rains have damaged crops in the growing regions. According to Kaushik, only 15 percent of tomatoes were supplied in Azadpur mandi on Wednesday. This supply was supplied in only 6 small trucks from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. This is the reason why the prices of tomatoes have started skyrocketing.
