Technical snag grounds Vizag-bound Air India Express flight

An Air India Express flight bound for Visakhapatnam was canceled on the night of December 18 after a technical snag was detected before takeoff at Gannavaram airport, an airport official said.

The passengers included several high-profile individuals, including former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu, and senior YSRCP leader B Satyanarayana.

“An engine malfunction was detected while the aircraft was taxiing on the runway, following which the aircraft was brought back to the bay and the flight was canceled,” Vijayawada Airport Director Lakshmikant Reddy told PTI late Thursday night.

According to Reddy, the technical snag occurred around 8:30 pm on Thursday.

Meanwhile, an Air India Express spokesperson said the engine issue was identified before takeoff.

“Our flight from Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam returned to the ramp due to a technical snag detected by the pilot before takeoff, as a precautionary measure. Consequently, the flight was canceled,” the spokesperson said on Friday.

Furthermore, passengers were provided with hotel accommodation and offered full refunds and the option to reschedule their flights free of charge.

The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the passengers and reiterated that safety is paramount in all aspects of its operations.

Airport authorities clarified that an Air India Express flight was canceled on Thursday night.

Vijayawada Airport Director Lakshmikant Reddy told PTI late Thursday night, “An engine malfunction was detected while the aircraft was taxiing on the runway, following which the aircraft was brought back to the bay and the flight was canceled.”

A spokesperson said on Friday, “Our aircraft, which was scheduled to fly from Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam, returned to the ramp as a precautionary measure after the pilot detected a technical snag before takeoff. As a result, the flight was canceled.”
