The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to Delhi Police on petitions filed by Newsclick founder and editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakraborty. In this, his police custody has been challenged in the case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The bench comprised Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice P.K. Mishra heard the arguments and issued a notice seeking a reply within three weeks. The matter will be listed for further hearing on October 30. It is alleged that the news portal had received money to run pro-China propaganda.

On October 3, the Delhi Police arrested the duo after multiple raids, including at the Newsclick office and the residences of the news portal’s editors and journalists. Purkayastha reached the apex court on Monday after the petitions were rejected by the High Court.
