Amid concerns over the living conditions of UPSC aspirants in Delhi’s coaching center areas after the death of three students preparing for civil services in Old Rajendra Nagar, a case of alleged suicide of a student suffering from depression has come to light.
The 26-year-old woman, a resident of Akola in Maharashtra, was found hanging in her PG in Old Rajendra Nagar on July 21, police said on Saturday. The matter came to light after the alleged suicide note of the student surfaced on social media.
In the alleged suicide note, the woman mentioned her struggle with depression and appealed to the government to prevent malpractices in examinations and create jobs for the youth. Besides, she also demanded reduction in rent of PGs and hostels for students.
According to police, however, the family members of the student have said that she was depressed due to harassment by a man. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Harsh Vardhan said the matter is under investigation.
Police said a friend of the victim told the media that she had mentioned the rising hostel rent in a recent conversation. According to the friend, the student had to vacate her hostel on August 5. Police said she had been living in Delhi for the last four years to prepare for civil services exams.
