Manila: A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on Tuesday night, with tremors so strong that several buildings cracked. People fled their homes in fear, and power supply was cut off in many areas. A frightening video of the earthquake has also surfaced, going viral on social media and causing panic. The Philippines’ government disaster relief agency said on Wednesday that the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 26, with 147 others injured.

Part of the historic St. Peter the Apostle Parish Church in Tayan, Cebu province, collapsed due to the earthquake. A video viral on social media shows church lights and parts of the exterior structure collapsing. According to AFP, Martham Pakilan, a 25-year-old resident of Bantayan town, said he was in the square near the church when the earthquake struck.

“I heard a loud rumble from the direction of the church and then saw stones falling. Fortunately, no one was injured. I was in shock and panic, but my body couldn’t move. I just waited for the shaking to stop,” he said.

Earthquakes are common in the Philippines, as the country lies on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” an active zone of seismic activity stretching from Japan to Southeast Asia.
