A powerful earthquake has occurred in Saumlaki city of Indonesia. Strong earthquake tremors have been felt. The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1.

A massive earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale occurred in Indonesia’s Maluku province on Wednesday, but it did not cause a tsunami. The country’s meteorological agency BMKG has given this information. Xinhua news agency quoted BMKG as saying that the earthquake occurred at 11.52 am.
It said the epicenter of the earthquake was 251 km northwest of Maluku Tenggara Barat (Tanimber Islands) district at a depth of 10 km below the sea level.
BMKG said the earthquake’s intensity was felt strongest at four to five on the MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) scale in Soumalaki town and the Banda Sea and weaker in other parts of the province.
The meteorological agency did not issue a tsunami warning. The earthquake did not have the capacity to generate sea waves. There is currently no report of loss of life or property.
