Court Had Directed for the Examination
Earlier, the Supreme Court, after hearing Sonam Wangchuk’s complaint of stomach problems due to contaminated drinking water, directed on Thursday that he be examined by a specialist doctor. Wangchuk (59) is currently in custody at Jodhpur Central Jail.
A bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and P.B. Varale also directed the jail authorities to provide Wangchuk’s medical report in a sealed envelope by Monday.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, informed the court that a petition had been filed seeking directions to the jail authorities for an immediate medical examination of the climate activist.
The lawyer appearing for the Rajasthan government, however, stated that the jail doctor had examined him 21 times in the last four months.
Allegations Against Sonam
Wangchuk was detained on September 26 last year, two days after violent protests demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule, under the stringent National Security Act (NSA). During these protests, four people were killed and 90 were injured in the union territory.
The government has accused Wangchuk of inciting the violence.
