Soldier assaulted at U.P. toll plaza, One more accused held, NHAI slaps ₹20 lakh fine on operator

The Superintendent of Police said that based on the complaint of the soldier’s father, Krishnapal, a case was registered under relevant sections at the Sarurpur police station and six accused were arrested on Monday afternoon and another accused was also apprehended late at night.

Police have arrested one more accused in the case of assault on an Army jawan by toll employees at a toll plaza in Meerut district. A senior officer gave this information on Tuesday.

The police officer said that this arrest was made on Monday night and so far seven people have been arrested in this case.

Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on the toll company.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rakesh Kumar Mishra said that the incident took place on Sunday at Bhuni toll plaza in Sarurpur area when Kapil, a resident of Gotka village, was returning to duty after leave.

He said that there was a long queue of vehicles at the toll plaza and Kapil had an argument with the toll workers about leaving early, after which the toll workers attacked the jawan with sticks and iron rods when the dispute escalated.

The Superintendent of Police said that on the basis of the complaint of the jawan’s father Krishnapal, a case was registered under relevant sections in Sarurpur police station and six accused were arrested on Monday afternoon and another accused was also caught late at night. All of them were identified from the CCTV camera footage.

He said that the arrested accused include Sachin, Vijay, Anuj, Ankit, Suresh Rana, Ankit Sharma and Neeraj Talian alias Bittu and all of them will be produced in the court.

Mishra said that the search for other absconding accused is on.

NHAI’s Baghpat regional office project director Narendra Singh said that a fine of Rs 20 lakh has been imposed on the toll company after serious negligence was found in the case.

He said, “The company will have to respond within two days, otherwise its contract will be canceled and it will be barred from taking the contract of any toll plaza in future.”
