Sikkim Flash Flood death toll increase 26 people dead, 142 missing in the Sikkim flash floods

There is a scene of devastation all around due to flood in Teesta river due to cloud burst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim on October 3. There has been a massive devastation. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, 26 people have died so far, including 7 army personnel. Currently 142 people are missing. Army soldiers are also among the missing. A large-scale search operation is being conducted to find the missing people.

The bodies of 6 army soldiers were recovered on Friday. The Bengal Disaster Department said that these bodies were mainly recovered from the swollen Teesta river in Jalpaiguri district. According to initial estimates by the state disaster management department, of the 22 bodies recovered, at least six are those of Indian Army soldiers posted in Sikkim, who went missing after the flash floods.

The recovered bodies have been kept in four different hospitals at Malbazar, Maynaguri, Jalpaiguri Town in Jalpaiguri district and the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital at Siliguri in adjacent Darjeeling district.

The situation is such that due to accumulation of debris, the doors of people’s houses have also become jammed. Water has entered the houses. The trapped people are being evacuated. JCB machines are being used to search for missing people and remove debris from the roads. The help of sniffer dogs is also being taken in the rescue operation.

The Union Home Ministry has decided to form a committee to assess the damage caused in Sikkim. The Center has approved immediate assistance of Rs 44 crore. The damage has been huge, which is being assessed.
