The Supreme Court today once again talked about setting up a committee of former High Court judges in the Manipur violence, which would take into account the details of damages, compensation, rehabilitation, statements of the victims. The CJI said that we will fix the scope of this committee, which will go there and take stock of the relief and rehabilitation.

A hearing was also held in the Supreme Court on Tuesday regarding the ongoing violence in Manipur. During this, the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud fiercely pulled up the state government and sought answers from it on many points. Also, expressing disbelief on the state police, the court has ordered Manipur’s DGP to appear in the court next Monday.
In the next hearing, the court will ask direct questions to the Director General of Police on incidents, registration of FIRs, recording of statements, arrests etc. The CJI took into account date of occurrence, date of registration of zero FIR, date of registration of regular FIR, date on which statements of witnesses were recorded, date of recording of statements before the court under section 164, date of arrest in cases, A detailed reply has been sought on the points like the number of people named in the FIR.

CJI Chandrachud said that we are clear about the fact that handing over the investigation of 6500 FIRs to CBI is impossible. At the same time, expressing strong displeasure over the state police, the CJI said that it cannot be entrusted with the task. The CJI said that we need to know from the CBI that what is the limit of CBI’s infrastructure, as well as whether it can conduct this investigation.
During the hearing, CJI Chandrachud said that all the people who died in Manipur were our own. On this, the Solicitor General said that many dead bodies are still in the mortuary, none of whose claimants have come. After listening to all these facts and arguments, the court has fixed the next hearing of the Manipur case on Monday, 7th August. During this, the DGP of the state will have to be present.
