SC pulls up Yogi Govt. over Atiq Ahmad’s killing, seeks status report on 183 ‘police encounters’

A status report has been sought from the Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh in four weeks. The Supreme Court has also issued a notice on the petition of Atiq’s sister Ayesha Noori, seeking response from the UP government.

A hearing was held in the Supreme Court regarding the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Uttar Pradesh. During this, the court has sought details of 183 encounters from the Uttar Pradesh government since 2017. The court has asked the UP government that what is the system for monitoring the encounter? Were the guidelines of NHRC and Supreme Court followed in the encounter?

During the hearing, the Justice said that it is a matter of concern that why incidents are happening in jail. Incidents are also happening in judicial custody. When this happens, it undermines people’s confidence. We are not here to investigate, but want to know if there is a system in place. Why is this happening?
