Salim, a convict serving life imprisonment in the famous Chandan Gupta murder case of Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, died during treatment in Lucknow. The jailer of Lucknow District Jail has confirmed Salim’s death. Salim was admitted to King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow for treatment, where he was undergoing treatment under police protection. He died on Wednesday after his condition deteriorated.
Salim was involved in the murder of Chandan Gupta, who was killed in the violence during the Tiranga Yatra in Kasganj in 2018. The NIA Special Court, Lucknow found Salim guilty in this case along with 27 other convicts and sentenced him to life imprisonment. After the court’s decision, Salim surrendered along with other convicts, after which he was in jail.
It is worth noting that Tiranga Yatra was taken out in Kasganj on 26 January 2018. Chandan Gupta was involved in the Tiranga Yatra along with his brother Vivek Gupta and other companions. When the Tiranga Yatra reached near the GGIC gate on Tehsil Road in Kasganj, a dispute broke out. There were allegations that several people, including Salim, Wasim and Naseem, blocked the way. When Chandan objected, the situation worsened and stone pelting started. There was also an incident of firing during the Tiranga Yatra.
Salim, one of the main accused, shot Chandan Gupta, killing him. The violence led to unrest in the city, which led to a week-long curfew and internet shutdown.
After nearly 6 years of legal battle in the case, Chandan’s family got justice in January 2025. The NIA Special Court sentenced 28 convicts to life imprisonment in the Chandan Gupta murder case. The court also acquitted two people in the case as there was not enough evidence against them.
