The rupee fell by 22 paise on Friday, closing at 90.20 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the dollar’s strength against a basket of six major currencies, rose by 0.36 percent to 98.50.

The rupee depreciated by four paise to 90.24 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday. Geopolitical uncertainties stemming from US intervention in Venezuela boosted demand for the US currency.
Forex traders said that the rupee is likely to weaken further due to geopolitical developments, although lower crude oil prices could provide some relief. The rupee opened at 90.21 against the US dollar in the interbank foreign exchange market. It further weakened in early trade to 90.24 per dollar.
On Friday, the rupee had closed 22 paise lower at 90.20 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six major currencies, rose 0.36 percent to 98.50.
On the domestic equity market front, the Sensex fell 135.81 points to 85,626.20 in early trade, while the Nifty slipped 25.75 points to 26,302.80.
The international benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.07 percent lower at $60.70 per barrel. According to stock market data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers on Friday, purchasing shares worth a net ₹289.80 crore.
