The Shimla Meteorological Centre on Sunday issued a “red alert” for heavy rains in 10 districts of Himachal Pradesh, while services on the Shimla-Kalka rail line were suspended after boulders and trees fell on the tracks following overnight rains.

In Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain in seven districts on Sunday and Monday. Its effect is being seen in other districts including the capital Shimla. Landslides and trees have fallen at many places in Shimla. Due to continuous rain, debris fell on the road leading to Chamiyana Super Specialist Hospital in Shimla, due to which the road has been closed. Stones have also fallen on vehicles in Bhattakufar. Similarly, two vehicles were hit by a landslide on Panthaghati Junga Road.
A landslide also occurred in Khalini in Shimla, which has posed a threat to two houses. Excavation work was going on near the houses. Landslide occurred due to rain. A huge tree fell on the vehicle on the Bharari Dudhli road of Shimla, due to which the vehicle was completely damaged while the road has also been closed. Government residences have also been threatened by the landslide in Mehli, Shimla. The sewerage tank also collapsed due to the landslide. Silt in the sources of water coming to Shimla has disrupted the water supply.
Traffic was restored by removing debris from one lane
Due to heavy landslide at Chakkimor on Kalka-Shimla NH 5, vehicular movement was stopped for one and a half hour. Due to this, there was a long jam on both sides of the road. After the arrival of JCB, the traffic was restored by removing debris from one lane of the road. On the other hand, the World Heritage Kalka-Shimla railway track has been closed due to heavy debris near Kothi. Due to this, the first train arriving in the morning is stuck at Kothi railway station, while other trains have been stopped at Gumman and Kalka. Trees, stones and debris have fallen on the track at many places.
The figure of loss may increase
Due to rain and landslides, 38 roads are still closed in the state. So far 34 people have died after the monsoon hit Himachal. In this, 17 people have died due to monsoon, while 17 people have also died in road accidents between 20 and 28 June, while 74 have been injured. The Public Works Department and Jal Shakti Department have suffered a loss of about 70 crores. This figure is till Saturday night. The figure of damage to roads and other things may increase due to heavy rain at night.
Orange alert issued due to heavy rain
The Meteorological Center Shimla has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan and Sirmaur on Sunday, while on Monday for Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla and Bilaspur. There will be a yellow alert for rain from July 1 to 4. Flash flood warning has also been issued in all ten districts except Lahaul Spiti and Kinnaur districts.
During the last 24 hours in the state, the highest rainfall of 135 mm was recorded in Jogindernagar of Mandi district. Solan’s Kasauli received 125 mm of rain, Kahu 119 mm, Sirmaur’s Paonta Sahib 116 mm, Sundernagar 96 mm, Shimla 91 mm, Kufri 89 mm and Bilaspur 86 mm. The Meteorological Department has issued a flash flood alert in the remaining ten districts except Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur.
The Mandi district administration has warned that the gates of the Pandoh Dam may be opened today, due to which the water level of the Beas river may rise suddenly. The administration has appealed to the people living on the river banks to be cautious and move to safer places.
