The Rajasthan Police’s intelligence branch has detained a local youth from the Pokhran area of Jaisalmer district. The youth has been arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Addressing the media, Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Prafulla Kumar said the accused is alleged to have been sending sensitive and strategically important information related to the Indian Army to handlers across the border. The police officer said the arrest was made based on continuous surveillance and intelligence inputs indicating an increase in espionage activities by Pakistani agencies in the border areas of Rajasthan.

Jhabararam’s activities found suspicious

He said, “Based on this information, the Rajasthan Intelligence Department launched a focused technical and human intelligence operation, which resulted in the identification of the suspect. Anti-national elements across the state are under constant surveillance.” The ADGP stated that during this process, the activities of 28-year-old Jhabararam, son of Bhana Ram, a resident of Nedan village under the Sankra police station area of Pokhran, were found to be suspicious.

He said, “Technical analysis revealed that he was in regular contact with Pakistani intelligence officers through various social media platforms. Interrogation and forensic examination of the accused’s mobile phone yielded startling revelations.”

Honeytrapped and lured into espionage

ADGP Kumar said that Jhabararam was inducted into the espionage network through a honeytrap and financial inducements. He said, “It is alleged that in exchange for money, he shared confidential information related to the activities and locations of the Indian Army. Investigators further revealed that the accused had provided the OTP of a SIM card registered in his name to Pakistani handlers. This SIM card was used to activate WhatsApp, which became a primary communication channel for carrying out anti-national activities.”

ADGP Kumar said that after initial confirmation, Jhabararam was brought to the Central Interrogation Centre in Jaipur, where he was jointly interrogated by Rajasthan Police Intelligence, Military Intelligence, and other central security agencies. ADGP Kumar said that after verifying the evidence, the Rajasthan intelligence agency registered a case under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and formally arrested the accused on Friday.
