Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced Rs 1 crore as compensation to the family of farmer Shubhakaran Singh, who was killed on the Khanauri border, and a government job to his sister.
Kisan Singh (21), a farmer from Bathinda, was killed and 12 policemen were injured in a clash at Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border on Wednesday. The incident occurred when some of the protesting farmers tried to move towards the barriers.
Mann said in a post in Punjabi language, “The family of Shubhakaran Singh, who was martyred during the farmers’ protest at Khanauri border, will be given financial assistance of Rs 1 crore by the Punjab government and his younger sister will be given a government job. Appropriate legal action will be taken against the culprits.”
The farmer leaders were demanding compensation to Singh’s family and a government job to one of his family members. Apart from this, he had also demanded registration of a case against those responsible for the death of the farmer.
Farmer leaders had also demanded that Singh be given ‘martyr’ status. Singh was a resident of Ballo village of Bathinda. Singh’s body was kept at Rajendra Hospital in Patiala but the postmortem was delayed as the farmers remained adamant on their demands.
The Chief Minister had said on Wednesday that he was saddened by the death of the young farmer and also said that strict action would be taken against the culprits.
Mann had said, “A case will be registered after postmortem. The officials responsible for his death will have to face strict action.”
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) are seeking to put pressure on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led central government for their demands including legal guarantee on minimum support price (MSP) of crops and farm loan waiver. Leading the ‘Dilli Chalo’ march.
Farmer leaders had stopped the march for two days on Wednesday after Singh’s death. He had said that he would decide his next program on Friday evening.
