Prince Shahamat Jah, grandson of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad State, passed away after a brief illness. He was 68 years old. He breathed his last in a hospital in Hyderabad on Sunday evening. He was buried in the early hours of Monday at the graveyard adjacent to Masjid-e-Judi, King Kothi, where his grandfather was buried.
Shahmat Jah was born to Mir Shujaat Ali Khan Moazzam Jah Bahadur and Anwari Begum. Like his father, who wrote poetry in Urdu and was known by his pen name Shaji, Shahmat Jah was also an Urdu poet and published a few collections. He was active in promoting Urdu poetry by hosting ‘mushairas’.
Shahmat Jah’s two marriages were unsuccessful and he was childless. He was living alone in his Red Hills house and had recently shifted to his sister’s house in Banjara Hills after selling the property.
Shahamat Jah’s father Moazzam Jah was the second son of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last ruler of Hyderabad State. The Moazzam Jahi Market, a prominent landmark of the city, is named after him. Moazzam Jah’s first wife was Princess Nilofar, niece of Prince Abdul Majid, the last Turkish Sultan and Caliph. The couple had no children. Niloufar left her husband and settled in France.
Moazzam Jah later married Razia Begum. Shahmat Jah was his only son, born to his third wife, Anwari Begum. This is the second death in the Nizam’s family this year.
Mir Barkat Ali Khan Mukarram Jah Bahadur, the eighth Nizam of Hyderabad, died in Turkey on 14 January. His body was brought to Hyderabad and buried in the lawns of the historic Mecca Masjid. Shahmat Jah Mukarram Jah and Mir Karamat Ali Khan Muffakham Jah were first cousins of Bahadur.
Mukarram Jah and Muffakham Jah are the sons of Azam Jah Bahadur, the first son of Osman Ali Khan, Mir Himayat Ali Khan. Muffakham Jah, the head of the Nizam family Azmet Jah and his mother Princess Esra mourned Shahamat Jah’s death.
