Pope Francis dies at 88 after long battle with respiratory illness

Catholic Christian religious leader Pope Francis has died at the age of 88. According to the Vatican, the Pope breathed his last at 7:35 am local time today.

Catholic Christian religious leader Pope Francis has died at the age of 88. According to the Vatican, the Pope breathed his last at 7:35 am local time today. He died at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Vatican Camerlengo, said, “At 7:35 am on Monday, Bishop Francis of Rome returned to the father’s house. His whole life was dedicated to serving the Lord and his church.” He said Pope Francis taught us to live with values, courage and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized.

He was 88 and suffered from several ailments during his 12-year papacy.Francis suffered from chronic lung disease. He had part of one of his lungs removed when he was young. He was hospitalized on February 14, 2025, with shortness of breath, which later turned into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there.

On Sunday, Pope Francis called for freedom of thought and tolerance in his Easter Sunday address.

After wishing a crowd of more than 35,000 people a happy Easter from the basilica’s balcony, Francis handed over the task of reading his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (“to the city and the world”) blessing to an aide.

“There can be no peace without freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of expression and respect for the views of others,” he said in the speech. It also condemned “worrying” anti-Semitism and the “dramatic and deplorable” situation in Gaza.
