Poliovirus detected from parts of Pakistan: health ministry

The Health Ministry underlined that during every polio campaign in the country, parents must administer polio drops to children under five years of age.

According to Pakistan’s National Health Ministry, polio virus has been detected in samples from four districts of the country.

The ministry said polio viruses were found in four samples from Karachi and Hyderabad districts in southern Sindh province, south-west Chaman district and north-west Peshawar, Xinhua news agency reported.

The ministry said that while the country has a good polio surveillance system, polio viruses quickly and easily target children with weak immune systems.

It says polio vaccination is the only way to protect children from the virus and disability.

The Health Ministry underlined that during every polio campaign in the country, parents must administer polio drops to children under five years of age.

According to the World Health Organization, Pakistan is one of two polio-endemic countries in the world, along with its neighbor Afghanistan. The Health Ministry said that six cases of polio have been reported in Pakistan so far this year.
