People made to stand in queues like at demonetisation, Congress on LPG crisis

The Congress stated that the Central and State governments have failed to handle the situation and have left the people to cope with the crisis on their own. They remarked, “Just as people were made to stand in queues during demonetization, they are now having to stand in queues for gas cylinders.”

Citing disruptions in cooking gas supply, the Congress party has intensified its attacks on both the Central and Rajasthan governments. The party alleged that people are being forced to stand in long queues to procure gas cylinders—much like they were during the demonetization period.

Govind Singh Dotasra, President of the Rajasthan unit of the Congress, stated that the Central and State governments have failed to manage the situation, leaving the public to fend for themselves amidst the crisis. He remarked, “Just as people were made to stand in queues during demonetization, they are now being forced to queue up for gas cylinders.”

Citing the conflict in the Middle East, Dotasra warned that if the situation persists, it will deteriorate further and also impact the availability of petrol and diesel. Raising the issue of the Rajasthan Refinery Project, he claimed that while construction work has been completed, its formal inauguration remains pending.

The State President asserted that the suspension of bookings for commercial LPG cylinders has brought the operations of restaurants, hostels, and dhabas (roadside eateries) to a standstill, resulting in job losses for workers. He demanded a waiver of electricity bills for the affected industries and institutions, as well as a relief package for the workers who have lost their jobs.

Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Jully demanded that the government issue a white paper on the LPG situation. He stated that the suspension of commercial cylinder bookings has pushed several industries to the brink of closure and has heightened panic among consumers.

He claimed that, in the wake of the gas crisis, the demand for coal and firewood has surged by approximately 25 percent. Jully alleged that the black marketing of gas cylinders is on the rise and demanded that the government clarify how it intends to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara stated that the situation is under control. He affirmed that domestic LPG cylinders are available and that there is no shortage of them. He acknowledged that commercial cylinders are currently unavailable but noted that most hotels and restaurants have already made alternative arrangements.
