Pakistan’s newly-elected PM Shehbaz Sharif thanks Modi for felicitating him on his election

Narendra Modi had congratulated Pakistan’s newly elected PM Shahbaz Sharif on returning to power. People were waiting for the response after PM Modi’s congratulatory message.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his congratulations on his election to the country’s top political office. “Thank you Narendra Modi for congratulating me on my election as Prime Minister of Pakistan,” Shehbaz Sharif posted on Twitter.

Modi had on Tuesday congratulated Shehbaz Sharif on taking oath as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

“Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on taking oath as Prime Minister of Pakistan. Shehbaz Sharif took oath as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan on Monday. This is his second term in the post,” PM Modi said in a post on Instagram.

The swearing-in took place amid protests in different parts of the country by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has alleged rigging in the general elections on February 8. Pakistan President Arif Alvi met Shehbaz Sharif at Aiwan-e-Sadr Sworn in.

Shehbaz Sharif was on Sunday elected as Pakistan’s PM after securing 201 votes in the National Assembly, defeating his rival Omar Ayub Khan, who was supported by PTI. Prolonged talks took place for government formation and PML-N held talks with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other parties including MQM-P, PML-Q, BAP, PML-Z and IPP.

The 12th national general election was held in Pakistan on 8 February amid allegations of rigging and shutdown of cellular and internet services. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has led nationwide protests against alleged rigging in the elections.

Shahbaz Sharif, who is the brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, had earlier become PM in 2022 after Imran Khan stepped down from the post and PML-N and PPP formed a coalition government.
