In Pakistan, 10 bogies of the Rawalpindi-bound Hazara Express derailed between Shahzadpur and Nawabshah on Sunday. At least 15 people died and 50 were injured in this accident. Geo TV quoted Sukkur Railway Divisional Superintendent Mahmudur Rahman as saying that ten coaches were derailed in the train accident. The injured have been admitted to Nawabshah’s People’s Medical Hospital.
Rescue efforts are on to take out the passengers from the coaches damaged in the accident. A train from loco shed Rohri is reaching the spot. Rahman said it would take at least three hours to reach the site. He told Geo News that traffic on the up track has been suspended due to the accident. The reason behind the derailment of the train is not yet known.
Speaking to the media in Lahore, Federal Minister for Railways and Aviation Khawaja Saad Rafiq said that the authorities have been alerted about today’s incident. He said reports suggest that 15 people were killed and many more were injured. Rafiq said the train was traveling at a reasonable speed, as per preliminary investigation. He said officials have reached the spot and emergency has been imposed in hospitals at Sukkur and Nawabshah. On the possible cause of the incident, he said that it was either a mechanical fault or something else had happened, the investigation would find out.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the incident. In a statement, he directed the deputy commissioner of Nawabshah to provide immediate medical aid to the injured. State-run Pakistan Television reported that the Pakistan Army and Rangers began immediate relief activities at the crash site, with additional troops called in from Hyderabad and Skrund. It added that the army chief has issued specific instructions for relief activities.
