The price of veg ‘thali’ increased by 10 per cent in November compared to October, while the price of non-veg thali increased only by 5 per cent due to increase in prices of onion and tomato. This has been said in a CRISIL report.

Unseasonal rains during November damaged onion and tomato crops, leading to shortages of both in the market and increasing prices.

Crisil said, “The price of veg thali increased by 9 per cent year-on-year due to increase in prices of onion and tomato by 93 per cent and 15 per cent respectively. The price of pulses also increased by 21 per cent, due to which the price of veg thali increased by 9 per cent year-on-year. The price increased by 9 percent.

The vegetarian thali consists of roti, vegetables, rice, dal, curd and salad. Its average cost is calculated on the basis of input prices prevailing in North, South, East and West India.

For non-veg thali, the price increase was moderate due to decline in the price of chicken. The cost of chicken in non-veg thali is 50 percent of the total cost. In the non-veg thali, chicken replaces the dal while other things remain the same.

In comparison to September, the price of veg and non-veg thali had decreased by 1 percent and 3 percent in October. Prices of potatoes, tomatoes and broilers had declined during the month.
