An onion growers’ association in Maharashtra has sought compensation of Rs 1 lakh per acre for crop loss to farmers due to heavy rains in the state last month. Maharashtra is the largest onion producer in the country.
The Maharashtra State Onion Producer Association, in a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has also asked to ensure ‘transparent’ onion procurement by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED). Maharashtra has received unprecedented rains in May.
The letter said that onion producing districts like Jalgaon, Dhule, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune, Solapur, Beed, Dharashiv, Sangli, Buldhana, Akola, Parbhani and Jalna have been badly affected by the rains.
In a letter sent to the Chief Minister by the association’s president Bharat Dighole and Nashik district head Jaideep Bhadane, it has been said that due to heavy rains since May 6, onion crops have suffered a lot of damage across the state.
The association said that many farmers have lost their entire Rabi season crop even before harvesting. They have demanded compensation of Rs 1 lakh per acre to compensate for this loss.
The association has said that the onions which were taken out but could not be stored have also been damaged. The organization has demanded a subsidy of Rs 2,000 per quintal for such farmers who are forced to sell their crop at low prices.
