Passengers of Kolkata-Radhikapur Express had a narrow escape after it collided with a truck passing through the crossing at Farakka in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. Railway sources gave this information on Monday. There were no casualties in the incident, which occurred late on Sunday night, but around 15 passengers were injured.
Due to the collision, a compartment of the train caught fire. Two fire tenders reached the spot and soon brought the fire under control. Senior Railway and Railway Protection (RPF) left for the game early in the morning.
Sources said that the loco-pilot of the train tried to avoid the collision by applying emergency brakes, but this could not completely avoid the accident, which reduced the seriousness of the accident.
According to railway officials, if the loco-pilot had not been alert and applied emergency brakes, the severity of the accident could have been much greater. Due to the collision, the truck was badly damaged and so was the railway track. Due to this, train services on the route were disrupted for some time. While some trains had to be cancelled, the routes of others were changed.
However, railway sources said that the situation has started becoming normal since Monday morning and train services have been restored. Sources said it may take some more time to resume services through the up line. Alternative transport arrangements were made for those traveling on the affected Radhikapur Express.
