Multiple Flash Floods Hit Himachal As Heavy Rain Continues To Batter Mandi, Kullu Highway Blocked

Flash floods and landslides have occurred on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway (Mandi-Kullu) in Panarsa, Takoli and Nagwain areas of Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. This not only flooded the road but also caused considerable damage to the construction structure.

Many parts of the highway have been closed, due to which the movement of vehicles has been completely affected.

Destruction due to rain-related incidents

Himachal Disaster Management (HPSDMA) said that between June 20 and August 16, 261 people have died in rain-related incidents, out of which 136 deaths have occurred in rain-related incidents (flash floods, landslides etc.).

Infrastructure damaged

So far 313 roads (including two national highways) have been closed in Himachal Pradesh. According to an estimate, the amount of damage so far in the state is more than ₹ 2,144 crore.

What steps has the government taken?

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a relief amount of ₹ 100 crore and business projects worth up to ₹ 3,000 crore in Mandi, so that reconstruction and relief work can start rapidly in the disaster affected areas.
