More than 300 people have died in two days in an attack by a notorious paramilitary group on the famine-stricken Zamzam displaced camp in Sudan’s conflict-torn Darfur region. 10 workers of the United Nations Coordination Office have also lost their lives in these attacks. This information was given by the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs, quoting local sources. Civil war has been raging in the African country for about two years.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), while giving information about this incident on Monday, said that a large number of people have died in the Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps and in and around the city of Al-Fasher in North Darfur in Sudan on Friday and Saturday due to severe violence. OCHA, quoting local sources, said that the initial figures of the dead show that more than 300 people, including 10 workers of the United Nations Coordination Office, have been killed in these attacks. This OCHA worker was the only remaining health center among the centers running in the Zamzam camp of Relief International NGO. These people were working in this health center.

According to Xinhua news agency, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) gave information about this matter and said that at least 23 children have been killed in these attacks. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the killings, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Monday, “Our humanitarian and local colleague in Sudan, Clementine Enquetta-Salami, has also strongly condemned this violence and appealed to immediately end this violence and protect the common people and humanitarian workers. Legal action will definitely be taken against the culprits of these attacks.”

This huge Zamzam camp is located 15 kilometers from southern Al-Fasher in North Darfur state, the country’s economic center. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said that at least 16,000 people have been displaced from the Zamzam camp, many of whom are migrating towards El Fasher and Taweelah in the west. However, OCHA said local partners reported that the humanitarian and security situation in El Fasher was rapidly deteriorating due to continued violence and an increasing influx of displaced people.

IOM said local sources east of El Fasher in the town of Um Qaddah in North Darfur reported more than 50 people killed and 900 homes destroyed in recent fighting. The agency estimated that about 19,000 people had been displaced from the area since Thursday. OCHA said residents and displaced people in Zamzam and El Fasher were facing acute shortages of essential supplies, including food, fuel and health items. Diesel fuel prices have increased fivefold in the past three months, limiting access to safe drinking water.

OCHA said some relief supplies had already been deployed to nearby locations such as Taweelah and Al Quma. Humanitarians sent additional relief supplies to Taweelah, including 1,800 metric tons of food aid, to help meet the immediate needs of displaced families. The World Health Organization said there have been nearly 160 attacks on healthcare since the start of the conflict two years ago, resulting in more than 300 deaths. One third of hospitals are not functioning and recent funding cuts have forced health partners to reduce support to more than 300 health facilities across the country. Civil war broke out in Sudan on April 15, 2023, with Rapid Support Force militias attacking the capital, Khartoum.
