Assam Rifles in collaboration with Mizoram Police have seized drugs worth Rs 66.31 crore from the border Champhai district in two joint operations. The district shares an unfenced border with Myanmar and is a hub of drug smuggling. Officials gave this information on Sunday.

A defense spokesperson said that Assam Rifles along with policemen on Saturday seized narcotic methamphetamine tablets weighing 20.20 kg, worth Rs 60.62 crore, from Crossing Point One, Zokhawthar in Champhai district. The team had received information about a large consignment of drugs being smuggled into India near the Myanmar border.

The team intercepted and seized the consignment and later handed it over to the police department. No one was arrested in this connection. Assam Rifles in collaboration with Mizoram Police have seized 492 grams of heroin worth Rs 3.69 crore from World Bank Road in the same Zokhawthar in Champhai district. The drugs were being carried by two persons on a scooter.

The suspects fled leaving the consignment behind when challenged by Assam Rifles personnel. The police have taken the entire consignment into their custody.

Mizoram shares a 510-km-long unfenced border with Myanmar’s Chin state, leading to large-scale drug smuggling through its six districts – Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual and Serchhip. Champhai district is the hub of drug smuggling from Myanmar.

After smuggling from Myanmar, various types of drugs come to Mizoram via neighbouring Bangladesh and Tripura via Assam.

Myanmar, which shares a 1,643-km unfenced border with four northeastern states – Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km) and Mizoram (510 km) – serves as a major transit point for drugs, especially heroin and methamphetamine pills, into India.

From the northeastern states, these drugs are smuggled into Bangladesh, which shares a 1,880-km border with Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km).

While a significant portion of the India-Bangladesh border is fenced, the India-Myanmar border is completely open, encouraging smuggling.
