Heavy rains in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region over the past four days have killed at least eight people, submerged several villages, damaged houses, and destroyed crops on thousands of hectares of farmland, officials said on Tuesday.

The state cabinet reviewed the situation at a meeting in Mumbai, where Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that the government is working tirelessly to provide relief to farmers and other affected people.

The Chief Minister said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has rescued 27 people in Dharashiv district, while 200 others have been evacuated to safer places.

Many areas of Marathwada have been receiving continuous rainfall since September 20. The heavy rains have filled dams, forcing them to release water.

“Eight people have died since September 20, including three in Latur, two in Beed, and one each in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nanded, and Dharashiv due to lightning, drowning, and other causes,” a revenue official said.

Officials said 159 villages were affected in Dharashiv and 186 animals died, while flood-like conditions prevailed in other districts like Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and Beed.
