Expressing his anger over the brutal murder of two young students, famous Manipuri film actor Rajkumar Kaiku alias Somendra on Wednesday resigned from the primary membership of the ruling BJP and accused the state government of incompetence in dealing with the ongoing caste conflict in the state.

Kaiku, who has acted in over 400 films including the two Kuki films, submitted his resignation to the state BJP leaders, while top leaders of the state have requested him to reconsider his decision.

Kaiku, a resident of Thangmiband area of Imphal West district, had contested the last Lok Sabha elections in 2019 as an independent candidate and later joined the BJP in November 2021.

Being a celebrity actor, Kaiku had drawn huge crowds for BJP during the election campaign in last year’s assembly elections. The party had achieved absolute majority by winning 32 seats in the 60-member House.

Kaiku said in his resignation letter, “My priority is ‘people first and party second’, that is why I set my mind to connect with the public in these difficult times.”

He said, “It is disappointing to see that the government has not yet taken proactive steps to correct the chaos that has been going on in the state for more than four months.”

Expressing his inability to serve the people on his own free will while working under any political party, Kaiku said, “I made up my mind to leave the BJP.”

He said, “I joined BDP thinking that the party will bring a significant change in our state with its double engine government. Of course, it brought changes in various sectors like tourism under CM N. Biren Singh. Keeping this in mind I thought that the central leaders will take swift action on the ongoing issue and end the conflict, but it seems that the central leaders are not paying any attention to the pain and suffering of the people and they are against every expectation of the people. “

Attacking the Kuki-Zo MLAs and civic bodies’ demand for a separate administration for his community, he said, “Now I am a free citizen to join the people’s campaign to restore public order.”

Meanwhile, Manipur Police, without naming the leader, said that after an unruly mob tried to attack the house of a politician, joint security forces dispersed the mob by firing teargas shells.

“The unruly mob targeted a police gypsy and burnt it, while also assaulting a policeman and snatching his weapon,” the police said in a post on Twitter. Manipur Police condemns such actions and calls for action against such miscreants. Will take strict steps to deal with them. Search operations are being conducted to recover weapons and arrest the miscreants.
