Manipur violence flares up again, mob attacks CM’s ancestral residence, police opens fire in the air

The protest against the murder of two young girl students in Manipur took a serious turn on Thursday night. The protesters met Chief Minister N. Protestors also targeted the residences of state BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi and BJP MLA Soraisam KB in Imphal East district.

Security forces immediately intervened and fired teargas shells and smoke bombs to disperse the crowd at all locations. There were some confrontations between security forces and protesters, including men and women.

A large contingent of central and state security forces, led by top police officers, is deployed in both Imphal East and Imphal West districts, where a highly tense situation prevailed till late Thursday night.

Protests over the killing of two young students in Manipur continued for the third day on Thursday with a mob burning a BJP office in Thoubal district and vandalizing another office of the ruling party.

The protesters also set on fire two vehicles inside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Imphal and another vehicle parked near the same office was also set on fire.

Police said CRPF personnel controlled the situation. Though the student protests remained more or less peaceful on Thursday, mobs of both men and women turned violent at various places in Manipur from Wednesday night.

They burnt a three-storey building that housed the BJP office in Khongjam and vandalized another building in Wangjing in Thoubal district.

On Wednesday night, protesters defied curfew and clashed with security personnel in Uripok, Yiskul, Sagolband and Tera areas, following which security forces had to fire several rounds of teargas shells to control the situation, officials said.

The protesters, including women, blocked roads with burning tyres, boulders and iron pipes to prevent the movement of security forces from entering residential areas. Heavy contingents of central and state security forces were deployed in various districts, while complete curfew was reimposed in two districts – Imphal East and Imphal West.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights urged security forces not to “arbitrarily and suddenly” use lathicharge, teargas shells and rubber bullets on teenagers.

BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh, in a statement, strongly condemned the action of security forces to deal with the agitation in Manipur.

Imo Singh Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who is the son-in-law, said, “Such acts of barbarity cannot be tolerated by the armed forces. Can’t they use water cannons and other forms of violence to stop such agitation? The armed forces should Instructions should be given to be more humane in dealing with such delicate situations. Those involved should be punished as per law. I also urge my Manipuri brothers and sisters to desist from engaging in any kind of violence. Don’t be.”

He said, “Let us ensure that the murdered students get justice as soon as possible. Most of the MLAs present in Delhi have already asked the Central government to provide justice as soon as possible. Let us ensure that in the next few days The culprits involved should be arrested and given justice. If CBI is not able to give justice in the next few days, we will sit with our people in Delhi and take new action. But we should also ensure that our share in saving the indigenous people is Objective diverted, our common objective is to ensure that all illegal immigrants are detected, action is taken against insurgent groups breaking ground rules, completion of border fencing.”

At least 100 students, including girls, were injured in clashes with security forces during the agitation on Tuesday and Wednesday. The clash took place when students were stopped from marching towards the Chief Minister’s bungalow.

Security forces used teargas shells and smoke bombs to disperse the protesting students. Anticipating possible violence, Manipur Police, CRPF and Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed in large numbers in the Imphal Valley.
